Eid ul-Fitr-karnataka-www.vishvabhraman.com

Eid-ul-Fitr is a festival of breaking the fast and occurs when the new moon is sighted at the end of the fasting month called Ramadan. The festival marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. It is followed by celebrations of feasting and rejoicing. The word 'Eid' means 'festivity' and 'Fitr' is taken from 'Fatar' which means 'breaking' and has another meaning i.e. 'alms'. On this day special food and delicacies are prepared and distributed among neighbours and friends.

Ramadan does not fall on any particular day. But takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic year. It is said, during the holy month, Allah gave Prophet Muhammad the Holy Quran. Allah's words were revealed to Prophet Muhammad through an angel over a time period of 23 years. The words were noted and written down to form the Holy Quran. The Ramadan is also celebrated to remember this special month.

Muharram-Karnataka-www.vishvabhraman.com

The Muharram festival is celebrated for 10 days. For 8 days the Mullah sits besides the peeras and worship them reciting passages from Holy Koran. Many among the Hindus also offer worship at the shrine. They take a small quantity of sugar along with them and hand it over to the Mullah who after chanting scriptures returns it as prasadam to those who offered it. On the ninth day groups of young men from Muslims, Bedas, Agasas, Kurubas and other lower communities start dancing in front of the peeras till the evening of the next day to the beating of country drums. On the evening of the tenth day the peeras are ceremoniously removed and they are taken through in the main streets in a procession and later on immersed in a well. Muslim members sing in mournful tone and return home.

Diwali-Karnataka-www.vishvabhraman.com

The festival of lamps, Diwali, is an ancient tradition that is celebrated through Karnataka in one manner. The festival has been celebrated for ages and grows in fascination by each year. Everyone enjoys the goodies, the glitter and glamor, and the endless zest for living that suddenly grips people around this time. The victory of light over darkness is celebrated joyously all over the region. It is also considered to be a festival of wealth and prosperity.

The legend followed in Karnataka is that of an emperor named Bali who had become all-powerful and a threat to the peace of the universe. God Vishnu is said to have come to earth in the form of a short Brahmin (The Vamana Avatar), and presenting himself before the mighty Bali asked for "as much land as three of my footsteps would cover." As no king should refuse a Brahmin's appeal for charity, Bali readily granted what seemed to him a trifling request. Whereupon the diminutive Brahmin resumed his all-pervasive, omnipresent form and covers the heavens with one foot and the world below with another. He asked where he should place his foot for the third step. Bali bowed before him and offered his own head for him to place his foot on. This victory is observed on the day of the new moon (Amavasya) when the month of Ashwin (October-November) makes way for the month of Kartik.
